Woodridge, IL - Traffic Safety
Check Point Operation Conducted
- 50% of
Vehicles Inspected declared "Out of Service"
The
Woodridge Police Department, in cooperation with the Illinois State Police,
the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, DuPage B.A.T.T.L.E., and the Downers
Grove Police Department conducted a traffic safety checkpoint operation
on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the 8000 block
of northbound Route 53. Over 300 commercial vehicles were checked for
weight violations using Illinois State Police portable scales. Six vehicles
were found to be over allowable weight limits. In addition, DuPage B.A.T.T.L.E.,
a vehicle anti-theft task force, discovered two vehicles in violation
of Illinois anti-theft laws.
32
vehicles, including truck and trailer vehicles were given full Level
1 Motor Carrier Safety Inspections to ensure compliance with Federal
standards. Of the 32 vehicles inspected, over 50% of vehicles were found
to be in dangerous condition and were declared out of service.
Those 17 vehicles were kept at the site of the inspection
until they were either repaired on scene or towed to a repair facility.
The national average of vehicles declared out of service in a truck safety
checkpoint operation is 26%. Due to the high percentage of vehicles declared
out of service during the operation, a second operation will be planned
for later this summer.

Bobcat
is not secured to trailer, (safety
chains left laying on the deck
unattached), no brake or signal
lamps, broken identification
lamps, and the trailer had illegal "surge
brakes," so it was placed
out of service.
